Bodycam shows Carter County Sheriff responds to recent traffic stop, says ‘everybody speeds’

Body cam footage from mid-January alleges that Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant was speeding in Ardmore.

The officer stated Bryant was driving 70 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone.

The last time News 12 broke the story of Bryant getting pulled over was in 2021 in Wilson. At the time the sheriff was uncooperative, refusing to hand over his license, and getting out of his truck.

Bryant told News 12 he was on his way into work to take care of a few things when he was pulled over.

Bryant stated he never asked for special treatment.

“I’ve admitted before that I got a lead foot,” Bryant said. “I do speed. I’m not different than anybody else.”

Bryant said it wasn’t the only time he’s been pulled over.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that a trooper pulled Bryant over about a year ago.

When asked what taxpayers and voters of Carter County should take away from the speeding, Bryant said that everybody speeds.

“I think that everybody makes mistakes. And I think that everybody speeds,” Bryant said. “I know there’s a lot of other law enforcement people out there that speed as well, whether they’re in marked units or not. Nobody is above the law and that’s that’s what I’ve said.

When asked if he planned to speed again, Bryant said he hoped he won’t and that he has been watching his speed, but that sometimes he may need to speed if there’s an emergency.

Bryant was not on an emergency call at the time of the traffic stop.

Ardmore police declined to comment on this story.
