Lebanon tries out a different kind of school art show
Showcases of student artwork are as ubiquitous as schools themselves, but teachers rarely get a chance to have their extracurricular talents recognized. Lebanon City Schools hopes to change that -- and help show families an unseen side of their children's teachers -- with a new, one-of-a-kind art show hosted by the Arts Council of Lebanon. "Warriors as Creators," which opened Jan. 19, features sculptures, paintings, glasswork, quilts and more created by faculty and staff in the district. "This is a fantastic community with a strong population that hasn't really had a chance to shine," Arts Council of Lebanon president Rochelle Collins said. "It starts a different conversation." It's a conversation Collins and superintendent Todd Yohey, whose passion for sculpture helped inspire the show, hope will create new connections between educators and the communities they serve. "Coworkers were coming in like, ‘I didn't know she could do that!'" Collins said. "The children were fantastic. They'd say, ‘My principal did that?'" The show will run from noon-4 p.m. until Feb. 17 at the Arts Council of Lebanon.
