Laozi, (老子) also spelled Lao Tzu or Lao Tze, is a legendary figure and a central figure in Taoism, an ancient Chinese philosophy and religious tradition. The historical existence of Laozi is shrouded in mystery, and much of what is known about him is based on legend and folklore. Traditionally, he is believed to have lived in the 6th century BCE during the Zhou Dynasty in China.

Laozi is credited with being the author of the foundational text of Taoism, the "Tao Te Ching" (also spelled Dao De Jing or Tao Teh Ching). This classic work consists of 81 short chapters that offer philosophical insights and guidance on living a harmonious and balanced life. The term "Tao" (or Dao) itself can be translated as "the Way" or "the Path," representing the fundamental principle that underlies and unites the universe.

Laozi's teachings emphasize the concept of Wu Wei, often translated as "non-action" or "effortless action." Wu Wei suggests aligning oneself with the natural flow of the Tao, allowing things to unfold spontaneously without force or resistance. It encourages individuals to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature and to cultivate simplicity, humility, and a detached perspective on material possessions and desires.

Laozi's influence extends beyond Taoism, as his ideas have also left a mark on Chinese Buddhism and Confucianism. Despite the historical uncertainties surrounding his life, Laozi is regarded as a key figure in Chinese philosophy, and his teachings continue to be studied and interpreted by scholars and practitioners around the world.
