Wat Bang Thong (Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol)
วัดมหาธาตุวชิรมงคล (วัดบางโทง)

This temple was known by the villagers as Wat Bang Tong (Wat Rong Tong) after the name of the small town in which it is located, but it was later renamed Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol.

It is around an hours drive from Ao Nang Beach and Krabi. The highlight of the temple is its large golden chedi, the Phra Mahathat Chedi. It is inspired by the Maha Chedi Phutthakhaya in India. This is the location that Buddha attained Enlightenment.

On the temple grounds there are 2 large statues. When you enter the temple the first thing you see is a large standing Buddha to your right. The second statue to the right of the temple is the revered monk Luang Phu Thuat.

Wat Bang Thong is a very beautiful temple in Krabi and well worth the hour drive from the city or Ao Nang beach to see it.

The temple originally dates back to around 1940. The temple was in such a neglected condition that it was completely demolished with new buildings being constructed in 1997. The Ubosot is the only building that wasn’t completely leveled but was instead restored to its current condition.

In 2002 the Phra Mahathat Chedi was constructed for the 50th birthday of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn (now Thai King Rama X). The Chedi is designed with the Maha Chedi Phutthakhaya in India in mind. The amazing golden Chedi stands at 95 meters and is the tallest pagoda in southern Thailand.

In 2006 King Rama X gave the temple the new name of Mahathat Vachiiramongkhon. The main Buddha statue was named Phra Buddha Thaksin Chai Mongkhon.

The temple is a bit out of the way but tours are offered for people to travel here for it. There is so much to do in Krabi already but if you have time it is well worth a visit.
