"Operation Enduring Freedom" was the United States' military response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It marked the beginning of the global war on terrorism, with a primary focus on dismantling the al-Qaeda terrorist network and removing the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which had harbored al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The operation commenced on October 7, 2001, with the launch of airstrikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda targets in Afghanistan. These strikes targeted training camps, command-and-control centers, and infrastructure used by terrorist organizations.

In addition to airstrikes, Operation Enduring Freedom involved ground operations by U.S. Special Forces, alongside Afghan opposition groups such as the Northern Alliance. These forces worked to overthrow the Taliban regime and disrupt al-Qaeda operations in the country.

The operation also aimed to establish a stable and democratic government in Afghanistan, promote reconstruction and development efforts, and support the Afghan people in rebuilding their nation after decades of conflict.

Over time, Operation Enduring Freedom evolved to include counterinsurgency efforts, reconstruction projects, and training and equipping the Afghan National Security Forces. It became the longest-running war in United States history, lasting over 19 years until its formal conclusion on August 31, 2021.

While Operation Enduring Freedom achieved significant successes, including the removal of the Taliban from power and the disruption of terrorist networks in Afghanistan, it also faced challenges and criticism, including concerns about civilian casualties, the resurgence of the Taliban, and the complexities of nation-building in a war-torn country.

Ultimately, Operation Enduring Freedom represented a pivotal chapter in the fight against terrorism and the United States' commitment to defending freedom and security both at home and abroad.
