The Enuma Elish is an ancient Mesopotamian epic poem that describes the creation of the universe, the rise of the gods, and the establishment of order in the world. It is considered one of the oldest surviving creation myths and holds great significance in the ancient Near Eastern literature.

The Enuma Elish was discovered in the 19th century by archaeologists who were excavating the ancient city of Nineveh, located in present-day Iraq. The discovery was made on clay tablets inscribed in cuneiform script, which was the writing system used by the ancient Mesopotamians. The tablets date back to the 7th century BCE, but the poem itself is believed to have been composed much earlier, during the 18th century BCE.

The epic consists of seven tablets and tells the story of the primordial chaos, personified as the goddess Tiamat, and the god Marduk who rises to power and defeats her. Marduk then becomes the supreme god of the Babylonian pantheon. The Enuma Elish also contains cosmological and theological elements, offering insights into the Mesopotamian worldview and religious beliefs.
