For instance, the YAL-1 Airborne Laser program, which was discontinued in the United States in 2011, represented one facet of laser technology research. By 2015, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) had launched initiatives to deploy lasers on high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

This new approach differed from earlier concepts involving manned aircraft equipped with chemical-fueled lasers. Instead, it envisioned unmanned aircraft carrying electric lasers operating at altitudes as high as 65,000 feet (20 km) and potentially engaging targets at much greater distances, possibly in the hundreds of kilometers.

The primary goal of these efforts was to reduce the weight required for generating laser power, targeting a range of 2-5 kg (4.4-11.0 lb) per kilowatt (kW) and a total system weight of 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) for a megawatt-class laser. In contrast to previous systems like the Airborne Laser (ABL), which demanded crew rest and refueling with chemical fuel, an electric laser on a UAV would mainly rely on power generated from onboard fuel sources.

This approach could potentially lead to extended mission endurance and continuous operation with in-flight refueling. A "low-power demonstrator" for this technology was anticipated to take flight around 2021.
