What is the significance of Iconium?
If you are interested in learning more about the biblical places that Paul visited during his missionary journeys, you might want to know more about Iconium, a city that is mentioned several times in the book of Acts and in 2 Timothy. We will explore the history, geography and significance of Iconium in the Bible.
• Iconium was the ancient capital city of the region known as Lycaonia, which was part of the Roman province of Galatia.
• It was located in a fertile and well-watered plain, along the Roman road called the Via Sebaste, which connected Ephesus and Antioch.
• The city was founded by the Phrygians, an ancient people who spoke an Indo-European language and had a distinctive culture and religion.
• According to some legends, Iconium was named after an image (eikon in Greek) of the Gorgon that Perseus brought to the city, or after an image of mud that Prometheus and Athena used to create humans after the flood.
