Watches used to be mechanical only. Created by artisans, the typical timepiece cost 3 months salary and the more money you made, the higher quality the timepiece you could afford. This all changed with the introduction of Quartz watches made by Seiko in Japan. It almost spelled the death of the Swiss watch industry now that everyone could afford an accurate time keeper on their wrist. Mechanical watch companies needed new marketing to survive, so they began advertising their handmade watches as "Luxury" goods and "Status Symbols".
