Bodycam Release Date 1/26/2024 Houston, Texas - Charges have been officially filed against Broderick Rax, a 39-year-old suspect who was shot by a Houston police officer on Sunday evening at 8435 Tidwell Road. Rax is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance in the 177th State District Court. Unfortunately, a booking photo of Rax is currently unavailable as he remains hospitalized in stable condition due to the gunshot wound he sustained during the incident.

The officer involved in the shooting, Officer G. Chappell, was sworn in as an officer in July 2019 and is currently assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division. The HPD Special Investigations Unit, led by Sergeant M. Ynosencio and supported by Detectives V. Praxedes, J. Kosler, T. Vaca, and O. Flores, provided additional details regarding the incident.

According to their report, HPD officers were patrolling the area of 8400 Tidwell Road when they noticed a black Lincoln sedan parked near a business that had visible "No Trespassing" signs. The officers observed that the vehicle remained in that location for an extended period of time, prompting them to initiate a trespassing investigation.

The uniformed officers approached the driver's side of the Lincoln and discovered a male, later identified as Broderick Rax, sitting in the front driver's seat. They informed Rax that they were conducting a trespassing investigation and immediately noticed a strong smell of marijuana emanating from his vehicle.

Despite the officers' instructions, Rax refused to comply and exit the vehicle. He continued to resist their orders as they attempted to remove him from the car. During the struggle, the officers noticed a firearm within the male's reach on the driver's side floorboard. In an effort to detain Rax, the officers deployed their conducted energy devices (Tasers), but unfortunately, these had no effect on him.

As the struggle persisted, one of the officers witnessed Rax reaching for the gun. In response to this imminent threat, the officer discharged his duty weapon, striking Rax once. Subsequently, the suspect fled from the vehicle and sought refuge inside the nearby business. However, officers were able to apprehend him and take him into custody.

Following the incident, the officers immediately provided first aid to Rax, ensuring that he received the necessary medical attention. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further details will be released
