TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: David Strauss and Historical Criticism

Saturday 27 January 2024 is the 216th anniversary of the birth of David Friedrich Strauss (27 January 1808 – 08 February 1874), who was born in Ludwigsburg, Germany, on this date in 1808.

Strauss wrote a couple of books that caused a ruckus in their day, Das Leben Jesu, kritisch bearbeitet (1835-1836, English translation by novelist George Eliot The Life of Jesus, Historically Considered, 1846) and Der alte und der neue Glaube (1872, English translation The Old Faith and the New, 1873), which made Strauss both famous and notorious. Nietzsche responded to the latter work in the first of his Untimely Meditations, with many others entering the fray as well.
