Bodycam Footage Reveals Man Assaulting Officer in Lobby of Youngstown Police Department

In Youngstown, a distressing incident occurred when 27-year-old Keishaun Sims entered the lobby of the Youngstown Police Department in a state of emotional distress. An officer, who was handling station reports in the auxiliary office, initially tried to communicate with Sims. However, the situation quickly deteriorated as Sims became confrontational, leading to a physical altercation with the officer.

The confrontation escalated when Sims attacked the officer and attempted to gain control of the officer’s firearm. Fortunately, additional officers arrived promptly and were able to restrain and handcuff Sims.

Following this incident, Sims was arrested and charged with multiple offenses: aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; two counts of assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony; and misdemeanors for resisting arrest and obstructing official business. He was booked into Mahoning County Jail, with his bond set at $100,000 during his arraignment in municipal court.

The officer involved in the altercation was examined at St. Elizabeth Health Center and has since returned to duty. In response to this event, the Youngstown Police Department has issued a statement indicating their intention to closely examine the encounter and consider implementing additional de-escalation training for officers to better handle similar situations in the future.
