Kadovar Island has been erupting since the 5th of January 2018 for the first time in known history. On the 13th of January there was another large eruption that opened a fissure at the base of the island which has been erupting continuously for the past few days which has caused a new land mass to form. Volcanologists are concerned that water entering the fissure could cause a larger, more powerful eruption.

The residents of Kadovar were initially evacuated to the neighboring island Blup Blup (Rup Rup) but now the decision has been made to evacuate everyone to the mainland where the Government has purchased land from the local land owners to start new settlement.

We spoke to some of the residents from Kadovar Island and they say they will hopefully return to the island one day.
