The Birth of Joy. Trying to fit in. Day 2 of the Retreat. These are a series of talks given in a Retreat (Spiritual Exercises) to Carmelite nuns in Chichester, England based on a Pilgrimage to Compostela (North Western Spain). In the summer of 1983, a small group of students walked on the ancient road to Compostela accompanied by their Catholic chaplain. They had times of cheerful sunlight but also met the rain in Spain, chiefly in the mountains! Five years later, Father Jerome Bertram (now deceased) draws on memories of that pilgrimage to provide the framework for a Retreat, speaking about prayer: the first easy stages, the difficult patches when religion seems dull, and the final triumph in the love of God. Anyone who is trying to pray (and the world as it is today might be an indication that we need to go back to religion and belief in God) will need guidance through the joy, the sorrow and the glory of life with God. These readings from the book "Walking with God" by Father Bertram (Oxford Oratory) might help.
