Paris rejects then accepts Russia’s report about French mercenaries killed in Ukraine

France’s Foreign Ministry denied that any French mercenaries have been fighting in Ukraine after Russia stated dozens of French soldiers had been killed in a strike in Kharkov. The French Defense Minister then walked back the Foreign Ministry’s assertion and said that some of its nationals actually have been fighting against Russia in Ukraine, since Paris cannot stop citizens from volunteering as mercenaries – an activity that, in fact, is illegal in his country.
