Electric vehicle owners will have to pay road tax from 1 April 2025. In his Autumn Statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt confirmed that owners of electric cars, vans and motorcycles that currently don’t pay car tax will join other car owners.

Giving motorists a two-year lead time to factor the changes into their household budgets, Hunt said: ‘To make our motoring tax system fairer I’ve decided that electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).’

Car tax is a complicated business in the UK. All cars are required to pay something, except electric vehicles (at the moment). However, how much you pay depends on what your car cost when bought new, which year your car was produced and depending on the year of production, the CO2 emissions level of your car.
