The Mechanical Licencing Collective (MLC) has announced its plans to audit all digital service providers (DSPs) operating under the compulsory blanket licence it administers. This move, a first in the 115-year history of the U.S. compulsory mechanical licence, is in line with the Music Modernization Act (MMA) and aims to verify the accuracy of reported and paid royalties. DSPs, including major streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, internet radio companies, and music apps, will undergo audits overseen by Jane Bushmaker, a music industry audit veteran. This initiative follows Bridgeport Music's notice of intent to audit the MLC, signalling a proactive approach to royalty accuracy within the evolving music licencing landscape.
