Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang dynasty, around the 7th century CE. It later spread to Vietnam, Korea, and Japan, where it became a prominent form of Buddhism. The term "Zen" is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word "Chan," which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit word "dhyāna," meaning meditation.

At its core, Zen emphasizes direct experience and insight into the nature of existence, seeking to go beyond the limitations of language and conceptual thinking. It places a strong emphasis on meditation and mindfulness as a means to attain a direct, intuitive understanding of reality.
