There is nothing like some hot soup on a cold day. No one knows that better than the Soup Lady. Barb Gauchat has become the "Superstar" of soup. She says she started cooking at an early age "I know I was cooking when I was ten years old." Four days a week, Monday through Thursday 11am until 7pm you'll find her here. Her restaurant is an historic diner, built in 1928 and standing at 412 Oliver Street in North Tonawanda. When she's working, she's either making soup or serving soup and while she has other items on her menu, her soup is the big seller. She says she's created more than a hundred different kinds of soup-including polish sausage dinner soup, Reuben soup and one of her best sellers stuffed banana pepper soup. The Soup Lady usually offers for soups of the day, but her freezer is filled with what seems an endless variety of soups. Much of the inspiration for her soups, she says comes from her mother, who makes pies for the restaurant. The Soup Lady calls this her dream retirement job and always welcomes new customers to stop by and see what's simmering on the stove.
