Sermon Notes

Matthew 5:7 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

1. The meaning of mercy:
“Mercy” is love in action.

Psalm 145:8 8 The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

2. The marks of mercy: if I am merciful…

- I’ll be patient with those who are peculiar.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

Romans 15:7 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

- I’ll forgive those who have hurt me.

Colossians 3:13 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

- I’ll help those in need.

Proverbs 3:27 27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.

1 John 3:17-18 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

Jude 1:24 24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,

- I’ll do good to my enemies.

Luke 6:33,35-36 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

3. The motive for mercy:

- Because God has shown me mercy.

- Because you do not know when you will need mercy.

James 2:13 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

- Because it makes me happy.

Proverbs 11:17 17 A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.

Matthew 25:35 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…
