The famous speech by John of Gaunt, in Shakespeare's play Richard II is a patriotic outpouring by an Englishman. He is appalled by the disaster he sees engulfing his country when the rule of law is trampled upon. In this part we, in a sense, jump to the end of our story as we explore the special role that Britain has played, politically, religiously and culturally over the past five centuries. Many of us today see the fears of old Gaunt being repeated in the modern world. It is time to celebrate Britain's achievements in the present before, in the next episode, we dive back into the past to explore the roots from which the modern day flowering springs.
