On Monday, a private company's robotic lander embarked on a mission to achieve the first U.S. lunar soft landing in over fifty years. The Astrobotic Peregrine lunar lander was launched at 2:18 a.m. EST from Cape Canaveral, Florida, riding aboard the inaugural flight of the Vulcan rocket. The Vulcan rocket, a product of the joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin known as United Launch Alliance (ULA), had undergone a decade of development.
