The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT) is gearing up for the potential surge in traffic during the upcoming total eclipse in 2024.

As per an official statement from ArDOT, the state is bracing for an estimated 1.5 million individuals traveling to Arkansas from locations outside the state, in addition to around 500,000 Arkansans making their way into the path of totality. This anticipated influx is expected to result in an additional 700,000 vehicles in the region.

ArDOT has issued guidance for local residents to mitigate the risk of excessive traffic. In an effort to alleviate logistical challenges, Arkansas officials are encouraging visitors to prolong their stay in the area during the total eclipse.

To accommodate the event, several school districts have decided to close, allowing families to enjoy the eclipse and minimizing disruptions associated with school dismissals and bus schedules.

ArDOT is considering restrictions on issuing permits for oversized loads in the days leading up to and immediately following the eclipse. Relevant entities will be notified to make necessary adjustments to their travel schedules.

It's important to note that the plan is not yet finalized, and ArDOT is actively coordinating with local government agencies, businesses, and the public. The agency is in the process of developing a public communications plan to accompany the 2024 Arkansas Solar Eclipse Traffic Management Plan (TMP).
