The Red Fort or Lal Qila is known to be a historicfort in Old Delhi, in India which used to be servedas the main residence of the Mughal Emperors.Emperor Shah Jahan started building Red Fort on12 May 1638, when he finally decided to shift hiscapital from Agra to Delhi. Originally red and white,the design of Red Fort is credited to the architectUstad Ahmad Lahori, who is also known forconstruction of the Taj Mahal. The fort is knownto represent the peak in Mughal architecture underShah Jahan, and combines Persianate palacearchitecture along with Indian traditions. So, it canbe called as Indo Islamic architecture.

The fort was plundered with a lot of its artworkand jewels when Nadir Shah's attacked the fort in1739. Most of the marble structures in the fortwere known to be demolished by the Britishers

On 15 August 1947, the India's first Prime Minister,Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian flagabove the Lahori Gate. Every year onIndependence Day of India (15 August), the PrimeMinister hoists the Indian tricolour flag at the maingate of the Fort and delivers a speech from itsramparts.

As a matter of fact, Red Fort was designated aUNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2007 aspart of the Red Fort Complex.
