30 people died and the search for survivors continues after an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on Monday. The death toll from a large earthquake that triggered a tsunami warning on the Noto Peninsula near Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, rose to 30 people. All the dead were found in Ishikawa Prefecture, on the west coast of Honshu, Japan's main island.

A series of earthquakes hit the Noto region on Monday afternoon, starting with a 5.7-magnitude quake at 04:06 pm local time, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. This shaking was followed by an earthquake measuring 7.6 magnitude, and at least five aftershocks within an hour. The Japanese government has asked residents in the Noto coastal area in Ishikawa prefecture, to immediately evacuate to the highlands.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake triggered tsunami waves on Japan's northern and central coasts, with official warnings saying tsunami waves in some places, were expected to reach 5 meters. So far, waves as high as 1.2 meters have hit the port of Wajiima in Ishikawa Prefecture.
