In politics, an "unforced error" is a mistake you bring on to yourself with minimal prompting. That's what happened to Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley last week after someone in a New Hampshire town hall simply asked her what caused the Civil War. When Haley forgot to mention slavery, it led to the unearthing of similar prior statements where Haley avoided the "S" word and had some interesting takes on confederate symbolism.
