Mel Gray electrified the Silverdome crowd early in the game as he returned the punt following Minnesota's first possession 58 yards for a TD. The Lions' defense scored a touchdown 21 seconds into the second half as Kelvin Pritchett forced a fumble on the Vikings' first play from scrimmage and nose tackle Jerry Ball rambled 21 yards on the recovery for the score. It was then the offense's turn to score as Rodney Peete hit Willie Green for a 16-yard third quarter TD pass and a 31-3 lead. The Vikings added two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a three-yard run by Terry Allen and an 11-yard Rich Gannon-to-Anthony Carter pass, but could get no closer as Detroit recorded its third straight win over Minnesota.
