My strategy or framework changes a lot depending on each individual’s needs and ability, and also on how far along they are when we begin working together. First of all, my method is collaborative: I don’t rewrite clients’ essays for them; instead, I offer verbal and (some) written feedback that enables them to write and revise their own work. Generally, I start by help students break each essay question down into its component parts.

For instance, this UC question has three parts: “(1) Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and (2) the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. (3) How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?” I then help students develop their answers to the questions on a conceptual level. Once those ideas are more or less in place, I help students find stories and anecdotes from their own lives to structure their essay around. I feel strongly that students should use lots of stories, anecdotes, and personal details in their essays. Once the essay is pretty much in place in terms of both ideas and structure, I guide the student to do final editing. This process is different for “Why do you want to do go to X college or university” essays, which involve intensive research into each school.
