It Is Finished- (John 19:28-30) How Are You Going to Enter 2024? Happy New Year.
Good day, my brothers and sisters in Christ.
John 19:28-31
After this, Jesus, [e]knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
In v. 28, Jesus says, "I THIRST," showing us that the Son of God had assumed our human need and want for water; our Lord did this for us to be delivered from spiritual thirst. One of my favorite examples can be found in John 4:13-14; here, Jesus is speaking to the Smartian woman at the well and how those who receive His water will never thirst again. According to the notes and commentary of the Orthodox Study Bible, this scripture refers to Psalm 22:15, "My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death."
We see in v. 30 that "finished" (Greek, "teléō") better translates, accomplished, or fulfilled, and this does not refer to Jesus' life ended but instead shows the world His divine plan of salvation has now been accomplished. That "finished" (Greek, "teléō") better translates to accomplished or fulfilled, and this does not refer to Jesus' life ended but instead shows the world His divine plan of salvation has been completed.
"BOWING HIS HEAD, HE GAVE UP HIS SPIRIT"- According to the commentary of the Orthodox Study Bible, St. John Chrysostom writes that Christ did not die first due to His head falling as a result of death, but elaborates a little further that instead, our Lord is Lord over His own death, Christ bowed His head, and willingly gave up His Spirit. Christ willingly entered into death as the divine Son of God, and He destroyed the last enemy, which was death (1 Corinthians 15:20-28).
The final thought came out of a devotional, "review the things God has said to you over this last year. Are there promises God has made to you that you have refused to allow Him to complete? If so, commit and yield your will to God today." (Experiencing God Day by Day Devotional, page 366).
In Christ, love Jared W. Campbell
