A suspect is dead, and no officers were hurt in Phoenix following a shooting involving officers on Saturday afternoon.

Phoenix Police say the shooting happened near 50th Street and McDowell Road around 2 p.m. on Dec. 16.

In an update from police around 8:20 p.m., Sgt. Melissa Soliz said the suspect died from his shooting injuries. The suspect is identified as 37-year-old Alton Tungovia.

Sgt. Soliz gave more details about what led up to the shooting.

She says several people called 911 about a man who'd been stabbed near a business at 44th Street and McDowell Road.

"Officers contacted the suspect near 49th Street and McDowell Road, who was holding an object in his hand. When officers gave him commands, the man yelled back at officers and continued to walk away, weaving in and out of oncoming traffic. One officer used a PepperBall launcher to get the man to stop," police said.

The suspect continued walking with an "object" still in his hand. That's when an officer shot the suspect.

As for the initial stabbing victim, they were taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
