Chicago Mayor Urges Federal Support as Immigration Crisis Strains Resources

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has called on the Biden administration to take decisive action to address the ongoing immigration crisis in the sanctuary city. Speaking on CNN on December 27, Mayor Johnson stressed the need for "significant federal support" to sustain the city's response to what he referred to as a "humanitarian mission."

Mayor Johnson, a progressive Democrat, highlighted the remarkable challenges his administration has encountered in welcoming thousands of unvetted immigrants. He revealed that the city is currently providing shelter for 15,000 individuals across 27 temporary shelters, with an additional 4,500 children integrated into the Chicago public schools system. The city is also extending healthcare services to the immigrants.

While acknowledging his office's efforts to bring structure and calm to the situation, Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of coordinated federal support. He expressed concerns about the sustainability of the current approach, stating, "Without significant federal support, this is not sustainable."

The mayor warned that not only Chicago but the entire country could face challenges in managing the influx of immigrants without "real significant investment from our federal government."
