A recent report highlights domestic violence as a growing issue in Pakistan, described as a silent pandemic with significant impacts on society and the state.

The report, titled "Gendered Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Central and West Asia," reveals a notable increase in domestic violence cases in Pakistan, posing challenges to the nation.

A survey conducted in Punjab and Sindh provinces shows a 40% rise in threats of physical violence and a 46% increase in actual physical assaults by spouses.

Disturbingly, 14% of women reported knowing someone threatened with physical harm by their husbands, while 19% disclosed knowing women who were physically assaulted by their spouses.

The report attributes the surge in violence against women and girls to factors such as loss of livelihoods and COVID-19-related restrictions. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for gender strategies, gender equality laws, and highlights the potential role of the private sector in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in Pakistan.
