The distinction in sound between Mars and Earth arises from the dissimilarities in their atmospheres. Mars, possessing an atmosphere unlike Earth's, yields sounds on the Red Planet that are uniquely altered and somewhat subdued. NASA's Mars Perseverance rover, equipped with two microphones, has been instrumental in capturing these distinctive Martian sounds since its touchdown in February 2021. Among the recorded sounds are those of dust devils, the whir of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter in flight, and the audible crunch of the rover's wheels traversing the rocky Martian landscape.
