Meteora Monastery, Greece

Meteora is a striking rock formation in the Trikala regional unit of Thessaly, Greece, home to one of the most intricately built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second only to Mount Athos. The name "Meteora" means "lofty" or "elevated" in Greek, with an etymological connection to the word "meteor."

The monasteries are perched on natural pillars and rounded boulders that dominate the local landscape. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, twenty-four monasteries were established on the rocks, but only six remain. The Great Meteoron Monastery, the largest and oldest among the six, was founded in the 14th century. The other five monasteries are the Holy Trinity Monastery, Varlaam Monastery, Roussanou Monastery, St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery, and St. Stephen's Monastery.
