This monument to the Ilyushin Il-2 was installed near the Malaya Zemlya memorial complex in the city of Novorossiysk (a memorial overlooking the Black Sea that pays tribute to the Soviet troops who recaptured the position from German forces in February 1943).
The plane installed in the monument is real, participated in battles and was shot down on April 19, 1943. It was accidentally discovered on the seabed in 1973, literally 20 km from the place where it is installed today. In 1974 it was erected again and after restoration erected as a monument.
The aircraft which was part of the 2nd squadron of the 8th Guards Attack Aviation Regiment was flown by a crew consisting of Guards pilot Major Kuznetsov and Russian Navy Senior Guard gunner radio operator Reshetinsky. His remains were found with the plane.
During the inspection of the plane after the discovery, divers found two bombs in the left compartment; they were safely collected and exploded. After the plane was lifted from the bottom, 12 more aerial bombs were found, which fell when the plane crashed and these were also destroyed on the spot.
The monument is in good condition, it is clear that it has been recently tidied up. It is visible on Google Maps at coordinates 44°41'17.9"N 37°47'32.3"E.
