Google plans to restrict election-related queries on its AI-powered search engine by early 2024, focusing on responsible AI use in political contexts, particularly in the run-up to the 2024 US presidential election.

Alphabet-owned Google aims to extend these restrictions globally, including countries like India and South Africa, both of which have national elections scheduled for 2024.

Meta, the owner of Facebook, has already prohibited political campaigns and advertisers from utilizing its new generative AI advertising products. Advertisers on Meta platforms are required to disclose the use of AI or other digital methods in altering or creating political, social, or election-related advertisements on Facebook and Instagram.

Elon Musk's platform X, formerly known as Twitter, recently allowed United States political advertising, lifting the ban that had been in place since 2019.

Governments worldwide, especially the European Union, are actively seeking to regulate the use of AI, primarily due to concerns about misinformation. The EU has introduced rules to clearly label political ads on major tech platforms globally.
