California State Assemblyman Tom Lackey joins us to discuss California Senate (SB) Bill 1273, the so called, "School Safety: mandatory notifications" bill which was authored and introduced by State Senator Steven Bradford. Assemblyman Lackey spent 28 years with the California Highway Patrol, retiring as a sergeant. He shares his insight regarding the general legislative process, including the dangers of SB 1273. The bill eliminates the requirement of school officials to notify the appropriate law enforcement authority when crimes are committed by pupils while on campus. Senator Bradford's website states, "our existing system has led to alarming disparities in the type of students who are most likely to suffer these harms" of contact with law enforcement. Is Mr. Bradford more concerned with the meaningless physical characteristics of an individual pupil or the behavior they may engage in? The answer seems to be apparent.
