The European Commission has filed a lawsuit against social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, under its landmark online platforms law, the Digital Services Act (DSA).
On Monday, the executive said it is investigating whether X may have breached EU rules "in areas relating to risk management, content moderation, dark patterns, advertising transparency and access to data for researchers".
The move represents the first ever proceedings under the DSA, which was designed to create a safer online space, and adds further turmoil to a company that has struggled to find stable footing since being acquired by Ilon Musk for $44 billion.
This follows a request for information sent by Commission X in October after it received indications that the platform was distributing illegal content and misinformation, especially terrorist and violent content in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas.
If the executive finds sufficient evidence to support its concerns and fails to secure binding commitments from the platform, it could fine the firm up to 6% of its global turnover, which would have amounted to about 264 million dollars (242 million euros) in 2022.
