Smokey and the Bandit "NBC Sunday Big Event" 1979 TV Promo Spot

This is a TV spot for the 1979 network broadcast premiere of the 1977 box office smash, "Smokey and the Bandit" starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed. Directed by Hal Needham (Hooper & The Cannonball Run).

This was at a time when there no video stores, VCR's were still in their infancy stage and not yet in many households, no streaming, HBO (cable) was not available in a lot of places, so the only way to see recently released movies was either go to the movie theater or wait until it came to network television (NBC, CBS or ABC) in edited forms. This is a throwback to a golden era when TV was still innocent, and for people growing up in the 70's and 80's, unlike today where everything is saturated, on demand, mechanical with little to no fanfare, build up or excitement.
