A Connecticut police officer was punched and his patrol car damaged while investigating a street takeover on Saturday, December 9, police said.

The officer with the Milford Police Department responded to a report of a street takeover at the parking lot of a Stop & Shop in Milford. He arrived to find several cars and over 100 people gathered, police said. While investigating a small fire caused by M-80 firecrackers and other fireworks, he was “hit, punched, and had an unknown object thrown at his head,” police said.

Bodycam footage shows a group of people setting off a firework as the officer tries to disperse the group. “Let’s go,” he can be heard yelling repeatedly, before he is seen running and ending up on the ground.

Dashcam video released by police also shows several people jumping on the hood of the patrol car. Police said that fireworks and firecrackers were also set off on the patrol car.

The officer suffered minor injuries during the attack and was taken to the hospital. He has been released and is not working while he continues to recover, police said.
