Offset The "Nice Guy" Image

Often times the "nice guy" perception, in the negative sense, is a byproduct of not having a backbone. It's when you don't know how to set boundaries, are afraid to be disagreeable., and your only move is to "get along". If this is you, begin training your ability to break rapport. You have to believe that your personal boundaries, values, interests and disinterests, are important. Then it's just a matter of communicating your likes and dislikes, what you tolerate and what you don't, and your values that you won't compromise on. Having the ability to do so, will offset the "nice guy" perception, which now you can choose to be nice but still have the ability to challenge someone, as opposed to "being nice" as your only option.
