Nekada davno živeli su deda, maćeha i dve ćerke - poćerka Maša i draga Luša (Lukerija), Mašina polusestra.

Starac i Maša skupljali su ogrev. Ali odjednom se čuje zapovedni glas maćehe: "Maša, jesi li donela vodu?", i Maša joj donosi vodu. I ona je, po nalogu maćehe, hranila kokoške i pomela dvorište, ali kada je počela da pere podove, nije primetila kako je stavila kadu sa vodom blizu peći na kojoj je spavala Luša. Maćeha budi Lušu, ali ona, ustajući sa peći, pada u vodu. Ljuta maćeha šalje Mašu u šumu, govoreći joj da isprede brdo vune...

Once upon a time there lived a grandfather, a stepmother, and two daughters - stepdaughter Masha and dear Lusha (Lukerya), Masha's half-sister.

The old man and Masha were collecting firewood. But suddenly the commanding voice of the stepmother is heard: “Masha, did you bring water?”, and Masha brings her water. She also, on the orders of her stepmother, fed the chickens and swept the yard, but when she began to wash the floors, she did not notice how she had placed a tub of water near the stove where Lusha was sleeping. The stepmother wakes up Lusha, but she, getting up from the stove, falls into the water. The angry stepmother sends Masha into the forest, telling her to spin a mountain of wool...
