Hanukkah celebrations near Yale University were briefly disrupted after a protestor scaled the giant menorah to wave a Palestinian flag. A video of the flag offensive showed an unidentified man running full pelt toward the oversized menorah, while others ran after him and screamed at him to stop; however, they were unsuccessful. Later, up to four people begged him to remove the flag, but they were unable to either persuade him to take it down, or climb the three feet necessary to remove it themselves. The assailant later received backup in the form of another activist who had planted a flag on their own back. An eyewitness later said that the man was part of a nearby rally, and removed the flag of his own volition.

Yale President Peter Salovey called the incident ‘a deeply anti-Semitic message to Jewish residents of New Haven,’ while police have said that they are unsure whether to classify the incident as a hate crime or not, as the menorah was not damaged.
