I recently took an Uber in Scottsdale, AZ. Coincidentally, my driver, Jawhar Jordan, grew up in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant—a neighborhood that used to be one of the poorest in New York, but which my father helped revitalize decades ago. Back in the 1960s, my father set up the Bed-Stuy restoration project to rebuild the neighborhood, and Jawhar remembers how much the program did for his community. Rather than simply handing out welfare checks, the organization helped to create jobs, foster community, and keep families together—goals I will hold close to my heart as president.
