African Stream was honoured to host Pan-African scholar PLO Lumumba for a discussion about the major news stories on the continent during 2023. Most prominent were the geopolitical shifts across the Sahel, particularly the overthrow of Niger’s president Mohamed Bazoum. Burkina Faso and Mali have lent their support to the neighbouring country and are now in the process of forming a federation. All three nations have drastically reduced their ties with France, their former colonial master and neo-colonial puppeteer across so-called Françafrique. What does it all mean for the people of the Sahel and Africa in general?
