Fall garlic planting time.
Zone 7a time for the fall planting of garlic, my seed supply company shipped the cloves to me at the time I needed to place them in the ground.
I ordered two varieties that are also two different types. I have a softneck garlic and I also ordered a hard neck garlic. One is Nootka Rose, a softneck it It is a Heirloom variety, softneck, artichoke type, Strong, garlic flavor and Stores well. I counted 15 cloves. This variety will produce a medium size bulb. This being a softneck garlic can be braided.
The second is a hardneck variety, which means it will have a strong stiff center steam that will flower, this is called a scape and is a delicacy, only hardneck types will grow this stem. The harneck also have a more of a range of spice and flavors. It has a rich mild flavor that ends in a spicy kick. This bulb was very uniform and held 12 cloves, all almost equal in size and shape.
As most garlic, you plant both two inches deep in a well drained amended soil. I added a 5-5-5 organic fertilizer to the soil and worked it in. Now we wait till mid summer to harvest.
