Behind Closed Doors (Charlie Rich, 1973). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-12-05. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Behind Closed Doors," written by Kenny O'Dell, was Charlie Rich's third top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1973 stalling at no. 15 and his second top 10 hit on the Billboard Country Singles chart on which the song was his first no. 1 release (Whitburn, 2013). According to Kenny O'Dell, "The song was written during the Watergate scandal and the lyrics were inspired by how the Congressional Committee, that was investigating Watergate at the time, had a number of non-public sessions . . . 'They're always talking about no one know[sic] what goes on behind closed doors. Having the sessions, another session, behind closed doors. And I'm thinking, I like the title, 'Behind Closed Doors' '" (songfacts, 2023). Interesting that in 1973 the lyrics were a bit too racy for some radio stations; so some refused to play the song initially (D. Davis, texarkanagazette, May 4, 2023). Regardless, the "song won both Single of the Year and Song of the Year from both the CMA and ACM Awards. It won the Grammy for Best Country Song, and Best Country Vocal Performance for a Male. Rich also won Best Male Vocalist from the CMAs in 1973, and the album Behind Closed Doors won for Album of the Year" (savingcountrymusic, 2022).

Lyrics:

My baby makes me proud, Lord don't she make me proud
She never makes a scene by hanging all over me in a crowd
'Cause people like to talk, Lord, how they love to talk
But when they turn out the lights,
I know she'll be leaving with me

And when we get behind closed doors
Then she lets her hair hang down
And she makes me glad that I'm a man
Oh no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

My baby makes me smile, Lord don't she make me smile
She's never too far away or too tired to say I want you
She's always a lady, just like a lady should be
But when they turn out the lights,
She's still a baby to me.

'Cause when we get behind closed doors
Then she lets her hair hang down
And she makes me glad that I'm a man
Oh no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.
