DeVos and Rooney to Tour SWFL Schools

Washington, D.C. – Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, will visit southwest Florida and join Congressman Francis Rooney for a tour of local schools and meeting with educators. The morning will begin with a tour of Florida South Western State College (FSWC) and its related charter school, Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School in Ft. Myers and then move to Naples to visit Lake Park Elementary. Career technical education, job training and STEM will be the focus at FSWC while the stop at Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School will highlight parental choice and competition. A roundtable discussion with school officials and students will follow the first tour. Congressman Rooney stated, “It is a real pleasure to welcome Secretary Betsy DeVos to Southwest Florida. This visit presents a significant opportunity for us to showcase our schools and demonstrate the effectiveness of career technical education and STEM courses. As a member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, I am committed to creating opportunities for our students to gain the necessary skills to succeed in the workplace of the future as well as to broaden parental choice options and instill competition in education. Secretary DeVos has demonstrated a longstanding passion for education reform that puts students first and I look forward to showing her our Southwest Florida education programs and resources.” Crew members abroad a 27-foot boat called Reel Cowboy reported that a driver was in and out of consciousness, and was in need of emergency assistance. A flight surgeon was notified and and the driver was medevaced. EMS transported the driver to North Naples Hospital and he is in stable condition, said the Coast Guard.
