Beginners Guide to mixing Modern Art with Antiques

Take this group of paintings by modern living artist Mark Johnston - they’ve got a traditional feel to them in some ways, they’re not the typical abstract work you might expect when thinking about modern art…would you agree woth me that it seems Mark Johnston is inspired by the classic painters like Turner? …either way, they’re very vibrant and superbly modern …and when you look him up in gallery prices, very sought after too. The bigger paintings sell for around £9000 in a gallery
Some people struggle with the idea of putting modern art together with antiques, but let me tell you it’s easy and there’s nothing new in it…when you think for example of an upmarket classical English interior, yes you think of antiques…but the pieces you see in what might be a stately home open to the public, weren’t necessarily antiques when they were put in position!…classic interiors develop over time amd interiors are added to, so if you look carefully at these beautifully curated English interiors, you’ll see pieces from the 18th century mixed with items form the 19th century…today of course when you look at them, they’re all antiques…but it goes to show that 150 years ago designers were mixing old with new…so, doing the same today is not only normal, it can look exceptional
