Texas Votes to Make Illegal Border Crossing a Crime

Texas just approved Senate Bill 4, which would make illegal border crossings from Mexico a crime.

Scheduled to take effect in March, the bill classifies unauthorized crossing as a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail. Repeat offenses could escalate to second-degree felonies, with two to 20 years in prison.

However, charges may be dropped if a migrant agrees to return to Mexico.

The bill has, not surprisingly, sparked controversy, with critics fearing racial profiling.

In 2023, nearly 2.5 million migrants crossed America’s southern border, a record.

Currently, migrants are only charged with trespassing when they do. Responses from both the Biden administration and Mexico have been limited.

Mexico, not surprisingly, rejected any measures allowing U.S. authorities to detain and return migrants.
